Sun's Greetings

Happy Sankranti!!! The day we worship the Sun and thank him for all the food he helped grow! This harvest festival is celebrated across India and is known by various names- Pongal, Lohri, Bihu, Uttarayan, etc.
Sankranti celebrations in my house are quaint. We fast in the morning, go up to the terrace, pray to the sun, and have a sumptuous lunch which includes vadas, tuber vegetables, rice, sambar, and the highlight of the Day- Sweet Pongal. All this is eaten on a green banana leaf- natural and gives the food an extra taste! Then, in the evening, my mother and I go to houses in the neighborhood and give them Ellu Bella (a yummy mixture of various proteins), candies, sugar cane, jaggery, and some fruits.

Today, in honor of Sankranti, here is a poem I wrote 4 years ago, on the sun. It was published in my school's magazine🙃.

Sun's Greetings

From the dark blue sky,
Came out a little light,
Dim,
But was the life of the living,

Roosters screamed,
Birds cheeped,
Alarms rang,
The world opened its eyes,

The dim light moved,
Became ferocious,
Sucked water,
Made the world dry,

Gradually it calmed down,
Colored the sky with rusty yellow,
And moved to dusk,
Bringing rise to tranquility,

The sky turned dark again,
Saw the world sleep,
The light went back to its home
Waiting to come back ‘tomorrow’.
